South America is located in the southern hemisphere between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The following is an overview of South America.

Revenue from the massive natural resources tend to small, controlled rich percentages of the population in each country. The rest of the population lives usually close or accepted poverty. This situation has led historically to economic and political instability.
Historically, South America was home to a number of great lost civilizations. The Incas are of course, the best known. Their dominance was a short 100 year 1430 to 1530. In this short period coincided with the exploration and subsequent rule in South America Spain and Portugal.
South America discovered Spain and Portugal in 1494. They brought many diseases from Europe that had wiped out large swaths of South Americans no natural defences. The Incas are believed to this situation have fallen.
Both colonial powers interested in South America. Spain controlled much of the country under a contract with Portugal but Portugal controlled Brazil. In fact, Portuguese is spoken by Brazilians to this day. Regardless of both countries were heavily influenced by the Roman Catholic Church and trying to convert much of the continent to Catholicism.
Most countries in South America were able to gain independence in the nineteenth century. Colonies of Spain but finally gained independence remained a few in the twentieth century.
South America is a continent of contrasts. South America is a place at odds with itself from the peaks of the Andes, the Amazon rainforest.
